The New York City Team Contest started as the Stuyvesant Team Contest in the Fall of 2017. Created by Milan Haiman and Matthew Kendall, it was given to teams of Stuyvesant math team students as an informal competition within the school. Inspired by the HMMT Guts format, teams of four receive two questions at the beginning of the contest and upon submitting either question, they receive a new question. Scoring is typically displayed live on a screen for contestants to see. In 2021, it was renamed the NYC Team Contest with invitations extended to students from other schools. The format was adopted for use in the DMI competition starting from 2018 under the name “Marathon”.
